On Letting Go

Black and white photograph of a woman seated on the floor beside a wall, her head resting against her hand.

UNTETHERED

A short reflection on loosening our grip and finding beauty in what is already there.

I had a garden once.

It followed the rules.

Borders.

Sections.

Plants.

I didn't like it much.

It irritated me

But I guess it looked fine.

Curated.

Predictable.

Right.

Still.

I didn't like it much.

This garden that I grew

I sat in it for years.

Waiting.

Confused.

Trying.

I removed the plants.

Raked it raw

And sat in the plot of dirt.

Exposed.

Curious.

Real.

The dirt is my garden now.

We sit.

The dirt and I.

Untethered.

I like it very much.

The same thinking finds its way into the work of Aloka & Sol. Reclaimed textiles carry their own histories, marks and irregularities. Rather than erase them or force them into a form of perfection and social rules, I work with what is already there, allowing the character of each material to shape what it might become. Sometimes the most interesting part is not what we add, but what we choose to see.

Western Australian textile artist. I make one of a kind framed textile art and hand-dyed wearable art from reclaimed natural fibres in my Perth studio. Every piece is original, and the frames are restored by hand.
