ART STORY

This piece is inspired by the ancient landscapes of the Kimberley, where rivers have slowly carved their way through stone, shaping vast gorges over generations of time. Every curve, fracture and layer is the result of something that came before it, the landscape carrying its own memory through the marks left upon it. This idea extends beyond the artwork itself, into the handmade timber frame that houses it. Crafted from offcuts of a log overlooked for its cracks, holes and crevices, the timber carries its own history, its natural fractures echoing the lines of the gorge.

Within these ancient forms are the stories of Country and the deep, enduring connections of the Aboriginal people who have lived with and cared for it across generations. There is a quiet reflection of ourselves in this process. We too are shaped by what came before us, layers of people, experience, memory and energy gathering to form who we are.

To see ourselves as part of that continuum is to look beyond the boundaries of the individual and recognise that we are not separate from what came before or what will follow. Kimberley Gorge explores that connection, and the healing, expansion and transformation that can emerge when we begin to see ourselves as part of something much larger than ourselves.

With respect to the Traditional Custodians of the many Countries of the Kimberley, and the stories held within them.

HAND CAFTED TIMBER FRAME

Handcrafted from offcuts of a timber log originally overlooked for its natural cracks, holes and crevices, this frame gives new life to wood whose irregularities became its defining qualities. Its distinctive fissures echo the fractured lines of Kimberley Gorge, creating a rare connection between the artwork and the timber that houses it. The frame is an integral part of this one-of-a-kind piece, with its own unique character shaped by the natural history of the wood

CAREFULLY FINISHED

Each artwork is finished and protected using acid-free, buffered framing paper. The paper provides a protective backing while allowing the framed piece to breathe, creating a considered finish designed to protect the artwork over time.

RECLAIMED STORY

This piece brings together two reclaimed materials with a new purpose. The artwork is created from rescued premium fabric, hand-dyed and transformed into textile art, then housed in a hand selected timber frame that has been given a second life. By combining existing materials rather than producing new ones, each piece diverts usable resources from landfill while creating something entirely original. Due to the organic nature of ice-dyeing and the sourcing of quality reclaimed frames, these statement pieces are fundamentally unique and cannot be replicated. Each piece represents a unique expression of renewal and possibility.

This artwork is available for local collection from Coolbellup, Western Australia. Interstate and international freight may be available by arrangement. Contact Us About Delivery Options.

In keeping with the Aloka & Sol ethos, artwork is displayed using licensed interior photography to provide scale and styling reference. The interiors shown are real photographs sourced through licensed providers that support the photographers and creators behind them.
